TBT – Jesus Baptism & Temptations

After Jesus got lost in the temple when he was 12 years old, the next account of His life and ministry is stated when John the baptist comes into the picture. Now John was a cousin of Jesus, and He went into all the country around the Jordan preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins and many people thought that he was the Christ. Luke 3:16 “I baptise you with water, but one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. The next day, John saw Jesus coming down to the Jordan, and he said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A Man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me’ John 1:29-30

John baptises Jesus, and when this happens, the Heavens open up and the Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove, and a voice from Heaven said, “You are my son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Jesus began His ministry after being baptised and the Bible puts it that He was about 30 years old. After His baptism, He was full of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit led Him into the desert where He was tempted by the devil for 40 days. The devil says to him, “if you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” and Jesus replies, “It is written: Man does not live on bread alone.’ Now imagine this is the Son of God, He has all the powers in the world and He could showcase these powers to the devil any how He wanted to, but He didn’t. He didn’t show-off His powers, but rather He replied to the devil with humility, what is written in the Bible, that we shall not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes comes from the mouth of God. What Jesus meant was we need spiritual food more than physical food.

Next the devil shows him all the kingdoms of the world, and says to Him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give to anyone I want to, if you worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered. “It is written: worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’ Notice what the devil says ‘I will give you all their authority, for it has been given to me and I can give to anyone I want to.’ This world is clearly not our home, it has its owner, Jesus refused to bow to the devil, but we are seeing many people nowadays who worship the devil and aren’t even ashamed of it! they worship him in return for riches and glory. They don’t realise that nothing that the devil gives them is for free, He is manipulative, and controlling, and all these superstars or anyone who get themselves entangled with him will one day get punished. They are being used to bring about his agenda onto the earth, but they think they are being made famous!

The next temptation the devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple and said, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here. For it is written: “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ Jesus answered, “it is written, Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” Do you put God to the test? Has He delayed, that now you put Him to the test and question who He is? No temptation is permanent, no situation is permanent, after the devil finished tempting Jesus, he left him. The same with us, the devil will tempt us for some time and leave us, its upon us to choose if we will get into his traps or resist all his ways.

We can learn a lot from Jesus, He is the Son of God and as the Son, He knew that His Father was able to remove Him from the temptations, He knew that He could do everything that the devil was asking Him to do, but never even for one minute did He do it. Why? because HE obeyed His FATHER. He knew all that HIS Father was capable of doing, but He never went against HIS WORD. Let us learn something from Jesus, and let us follow His ways. If He was tempted and resisted everything that the enemy threw at Him, you can also overcome every temptation that is thrown your way. 1Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has seized you expect what is common to man. And God is Faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
