The Lord is my Shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to His Name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and you staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me, in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life And I will live in the house of the Lord Forever.
Psalm 23 is a chapter in the Bible that we know all too well and for most of us, we can easily recite it from memory. It’s a beautiful psalm written by king David – the second king of Israel. Before David became a kind, he was a shepard boy who tended after his fathers sheep since he was the last born. He understood the vulnerability of the sheep and how easily they panicked, and they couldn’t protect themselves from predators, hence needing a shephard to guide them. When we read Psalm 23, it’s a Psalm of sincerity, vulnerability and knowing who God is not only in David’s life but ours.
David was anointed as king as a teenager but he had to wait until he was 30yrs before he could reign as a king. He spent years fleeing king Saul who wanted him dead after learning that God had chosen David over him. David was always hiding in caves and running from one town to the other. David wasn’t perfect either, he fell into adultery, organized for a man to be killed and didn’t discipline his children. David had to flee Jerusalem when his own son Absalom organized a rebellion against him and he had to go into hiding. However, through everything that David had to endure, he saw the goodness and faithfulness of God and hence the reason his writing is so genuine and relatable to us even today. He knew he wasn’t perfect, but he had a perfect God who hears when we cry out to Him from desperation, sincerity and our complete vulnerability.
His voice can be summed up as that of a survivor. He was a great warrior who won many battles, yet his life was also full of betrayals from people so close to him. He went through personal grief, losing his children, one raping the other and yet another seeking revenge for his sister, killed his own brother – there was so much in fighting withing the sons of this great king. However, David still didn’t lose sight of who God was and his conclusion of the psalm sums it all. Lets go through the Psalm together.
The Lord is my Shepherd – What does a shepherd do? A shepherd protects, guides, and cares for the sheep. Making sure all their needs are well taken care of. The sheep cannot survive without the shepherd. This is who God is to us, our protector, provider and guide. He makes sure that we are well taken care of because without Him we cannot survive in this world.
I have all that I need – because of what the shepherd does, the sheep doesn’t need to worry they have everything. The shepherd brings comfort and trust, making the sheep know that as long as His with them, they have all that they need.
He lets me rest in green meadows – meadows is open area of land covered with grass. Our Shepherd gives us rest and plenty. There is unlimited supply in His Kingdom.
He leads me beside peaceful streams – the word here is leads. The sheep don’t go to the stream by themselves, but are led by the one person who knows the way to the stream. The sheep don’t know the way! This is what God does, He leads us. Psalms 37:23, puts it clearly “the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.”
He renews my strength – through the walking as the shepherd leads the sheep to the stream, the sheep get tired but the shepherd renews their strength. Even when they feel weary, he gives them the strength they need for the journey ahead. Isaiah 40:31 “but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to His Name. The word here is guides. To guide someone is to show them the way, the right way so that they don’t get off the track. The shephard guides his sheep and the sheep follow their shephard. Jesus tells us in John 10:27 “my sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. – just because the sheep is with the shepherd it doesn’t mean they will not encounter hardships and dark corners along the path. The sheep will encounter predators who will want to seclude and attack them however they are at peace because they know that their shepard will ward off any animals that may try to harm them. They are comforted because even in the dark valley the shepherd is walking right beside them. Which means they don’t know the way, they don’t know when daylight will come but they are comforted that the shepherd knows the way and he will never lead them in the wrong direction. That is who Jesus is to us, our light and guide through all the toughest times and seasons that you will have to go through.
You rod and your staff protect and comfort me – how does the shepherd use the rod and staff? They use the rod to protect the sheep from predators and the staff to guide and rescue sheep. The rod is a heavy club while the staff is a long hooked stick. Our shepherd protects us from predators who want to destroy us, removes us from the jaws of the enemy and rescues us from the devil.
You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies – blessings. The sheep doesn’t prepare the feast its the shepherd who does. This is Gods blessings and favor. Doors you shouldn’t have opened by yourself, platforms you couldn’t have stood were it not for your shepherd. That’s what God does, His blessings, favor, grace, mercy are all things we don’t deserve, but because of His great love, He grants them to us.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil, my cup overflows with blessings – abundant favour. It is never by our own doing but Gods! When He favors you, you find yourself also becoming a blessing to other people. Your cup is overflowing with His abundance!
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life – the assurance that the sheep have because their shepherd is with them is goodness and unfailing love ❤️
And I will live in the house of the Lord forever – the reassurance to live in Gods house (Heaven) for all eternity because Jesus Christ is your Shepherd!
The Bible is God’s very words to us as His children and we can read for ourselves on a daily basis. To get to know Him better, to know His promises for us and to know His plans over our lives. His words are alive today just as they were during the times of Abraham, Moses and Paul. When we read God’s Word in the Bible, it becomes alive. May His words become louder than our fears.
God bless!!
