Steering Wheel

If the steering wheel of the car you drive or would want to drive is to be embellished with decorations what would they be? diamonds, gold, silver, glitter or with family pictures? We all have different preferences to style and fashion, it’s never a one size fits all, however, what we adorn on our steering wheel in this instance would show what we value or where we’ve placed our priorities. Truth be told, the steering wheel doesn’t work by itself, it’s a compilation of many things which include, the engine, the gears, the gas/brake pedals and much more, but what makes the steering wheel the focal point is this – the car will not go to where you want unless you steer it towards the course of direction that you want to go. It’s like a small gps that we use to turn right, left and within no time, we reach home, our places of work or even a holiday destination. I tend to look at life as a symbolic metaphor of the steering wheel, a simple gadget that is placed and used to drive the car, steering it to different directions in order to reach our destination, however this simple gadget can also be a source of death and accidents that leave us with scars which remind us of the past.

The world as we know it now has so many ideologies, theories and different ways of life, in which if we are not careful, we might steer our life vehicles in the wrong direction and so I ask, who or what is steering your vehicle? The glitz and glam has cost so many young people to die when it wasn’t their time, the rush to get rich quickly has made them cut shortcuts which costed their very lives. Drugs and substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, living a life that wasn’t true to their true personality has seen suicide and mental health issues rise to a level that we haven’t seen in the recent past. Now more than ever we see the target is on the youth and young children who are still growing and trying to find themselves in the world, because when you corrupt these minds at an early age, that is the direction which they will take. Ask yourself this question, If a child needs to be fed and nurtured by its parent, why then are we trying to dictate what the child should become from as young as when they are a toddler? Cartoons have been used to hide information on same sex, pedophilia, violence and so much more – my heart bleeds for this generation.

Parents, rise up and steer the life of your children when they are young, the Bible has give you clear instructions in Proverbs 22:6 KJV “Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it.” This does not give you the right to provoke them, and Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:4 “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” The bottom line is this, do not leave the work of parenting to the world’s ideologies, celebrities or even social media, just because everyone else is doing it, doesn’t mean it is right. To the teenagers and young adults, don’t believe the “you only live once” YOLO, as an instruction to live a careless life! There is more to life than just partying and having worldly fun. There is fun in knowing God and living according to His Word, Psalms 119:9 How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.

God has given to each one of us a purpose to fulfil that is worth pleasing and bringing glory unto His Name. You were not put here on earth to live a life without a purpose or for you to just sail through, God shows us this in Jeremiah 29:11 “for I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future,” imagine that! You are not an afterthought, you are God’s master piece and the only way to start steering your life in the right direction, is first by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour over your life.

Different people will say there are many ways to reach self actualisation, but I believe true self actualisation comes from knowing your creator and allowing Him to show you your true identity which is found only in Him. Proverbs 21:2 “a person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart,” which basically means that as human beings, we each believe our ways are right and are justified in doing what we do, whether its sincere or deception – pride rules our hearts. Fact of the matter is this, once you have found salvation through Jesus Christ, allow Him to steer your life in the right direction. This will mean letting go of everything that you thought was the way and allow Him to make changes in you. There is nothing better in this life than letting go of everything and allowing yourself to fall into the hands of Him who controls the universe to steer you away into His God given purpose. Like a vehicle, you will get traffic jam that will be slow moving or not moving at all, don’t give up, stick to His lane, soon your car will reach its destination and find true peace that only comes from Him.

It’s easy to steer a car to any direction and reach the destination that you want even if it may not be your ideal destination, and it may cost you so much to get there. However, when you allow The King of the universe to steer you into His direction, a course with purpose, love and eternal life in Him, you will be making the best decision for your life. It’s a choice that you have to make, but I can guarantee you that it’s the best choice you will ever make in your life and not regret about it. Adorn your steering with the word of God, a real time GPS that will get you from point A to B of life. Find time to read proverbs 18, a short book with only 24 verses, which speaks on many life issues, but will steer you in the right direction if you heed to its words.

Blessings!!
