Here I am…

I love the story of the prophet Samuel, its found in the book of 1 Samuel.

Samuel’s mother, Hannah was one of the two wives to Elkanah and she remained childless, while her co-wife Peninnah bore children to her husband. Hannah was the primary wife and when she couldn’t conceive, Peninnah was brought in for child bearing. Hannah goes to the house of God to pray crying out to God to bless her with a child, to the point that Eli the priest saw her and thought she was drunk, but Hannah wasn’t drunk in alcohol, she was drunk in prayers, she was weeping out to God. Hannah prayed until she looked like a mad woman and everyone around her looked at her like she was crazy, but she knew what she wanted and she made a covenant with God almighty. Hannah vowed to God to bring back the son to God for the service of Shiloh priests.

God blessed her with a son and he was named Samuel, when the child was old enough to be taken to the house of God, she kept her promise to God and took him to serve God. This really blesses my heart, because there we’re times we have all prayed and told God something like this…. ‘Lord if you give me a job, I will always serve you,’ Lord if I get a child I will stop sinning and live righteously, and because our God is full of mercy, He gave you a job even when he still knew you weren’t going to live for him. He gave you a child even when he still knew that your heart was hardened and remained like a stone towards Him. You see, God keeps His end of the bargain, we don’t, He remains faithful even if we don’t. He doesn’t stop keeping his promise just because we keep jumping from one faith to the other. He remains GOD.

Back to Samuel’s story…

One day Samuel is sleeping and he hears a voice calling him and like any good child, he answer’s “here I am, and runs to Eli and says, “here I am you called me, and Eli says, “I did not call, go back and lie down. This happened three times and Eli realised that God is the one who was speaking to Samuel, and so he told him to go back and lie down and should he hear the voice again to say, “ Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” So Samuel goes back to bed to lie down and for sure the voice comes again, “Samuel! Samuel!” and Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening,” and the Lord spoke to Samuel and gave him His Word.

Have you being called? 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light. What does this mean? It means that we have all being called, called to into the great commission, to proclaim how God has called us from out of darkness and into His marvellous light. You see, any light, no matter how small of a flame it is, it can make a difference; you don’t need to be a pastor, revered, bishop or anyone who uses the alter to spread the Light of God. You can be wherever you are, in whatever job or even no job and still do the great commission.

Have you heard the voice of God and assumed that it wasn’t Him? Have you been called and thought that it wasn’t time for you to be used by God yet? ‘oh am too young, am too old, am too busy with work! my children need me, my husband needs me, our marriage is still very young. Our God is not a respecter of persons, He chooses whomever it pleases Him, you may be young, you may be old, but if God has called you, we need to be just like Samuel and say, “Speak, Lord for your servant is listening,” Sometimes we might assume that its not the right time to serve God, and we go through life doing so many things things that don’t add any value, things that don’t make sense, wasting our lives away, forgetting that everything in this life is vanity.

God has called us all and has given us different gifts and it is with these gifts that we should use to praise Him and Glorify Him. We have being called to spread the Word of God, John 3:19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. The words to these verse were written many years back, but still applies to our current times, our world is full of darkness, its full of evil, but we are called to be the  Light of the earth.

Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. in the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.

Do not harden your heart, do not ignore the voice of God, Let your light shine, don’t cover it. Whenever He calls, just like Samuel, go ahead and say, “hear I am Lord, speak to me, for your servant is listening. Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down, here I am to say that your my God; use me for the Glory and Honour of your Holy name.

Amen.Blessings!!
